Reno got drunk easily. After years of being his partner Rude knew this well, but each time Reno did it, there seemed to be something more interesting and funny about it. For a guy who drank as much as he did Reno didn’t seem to know how to hold his alcohol. His fellow Turks sat there trying not to snicker as Reno’s eyes glazed over.
Elena clinked the ice in her glass around as she watched Reno babbling about some chick he had hooked up with the night before. She arched an eyebrow at Tseng as if asking him if he really wanted to hear this. The dark-haired man shrugged and took a sip of his own drink while he cast her a look of sympathy. He knew it wasn’t easy for her to be the only girl amongst them. She was constantly subjected to ‘guy talk’ which, he knew, was not something she enjoyed. Especially when Reno got into extreme detail about how flexible the chick he happened to hook up with the night before was.
“Man, she bent so far back that-“
Elena sighed as she pinched the bridge of her nose. “Reno, please. No one here cares about the random skanks you hook up with.”
Reno snorted. He actually snorted. That was how you could tell he was on the verge of being ‘drunk’ rather than ‘tipsy’. He never snorted otherwise. “Damn Laney, didn’t know you would get jealous.”
She arched an eyebrow at him. “Jealous of a girl you happened to bang? Hardly.”
That damn cocky grin spread across his face. Elena had to admit, though she couldn’t really say she was attracted to Reno, that grin was rather sexy. If he hadn’t been drunk off his ass she would have thought it was even more attractive. “Hardly implies you are jealous, at least a little.”
“Then let me rephrase: I wouldn’t be jealous of someone having the misfortune of hooking up with you no matter what.”
Reno pouted and downed his drink. “Damn. I feel rejected now.”
“You should.” Tseng smiled at him from across the table. “Maybe if you hadn’t tortured her to no end when she first became a Turk she might feel different about you.”
“Actually, I wouldn’t,” Elena corrected him with a small smile. “Reno isn’t my type.”
Tseng arched a dark eyebrow. “Oh? Well, who is your type.”
She blushed as she took a sip of her drink. She was thankful then that the bar was dark late at night or else she would have been too embarrassed to speak. “Don’t really have a type. I’m just not attracted to Reno is all.”
Reno grinned again. “Don’t you think I’m sexy?”
She arched an eyebrow at him. “Do you really want me to answer that one?”
“Fine. Yes, you are attractive, I will admit. I can’t put my finger on it, but there is something…appealing about the way you look, but your personality leaves a lot to be desired. You are too cocky for my taste. If you weren’t so conceited you would be more attractive, but as it is, I am not attracted to you.”
Reno sighed and grabbed the drink Rude had yet to touch downing it in one motion. “All these hits are gonna kill my self-esteem.”
Elena laughed quietly. “You have enough self-esteem for all of us.”
“That he does.” Tseng smiled at Elena. “He has the world’s biggest ego.”
That smile made Elena’s stomach flip-flop. She had been attracted to Tseng for quite some time. He was dark and exotic and there was something about his voice that made her flesh crawl. Tseng knew, of course, that she had liked him. Everyone knew she had a thing for him. Or, rather, all of the Turks, and Rufus Shinra himself, knew she liked Tseng. That was also why Rufus liked to flaunt how close he and Tseng were in front of her. He enjoyed watching how she reacted when he would casually touch Tseng, whisper in his ear while casting Elena meaningful glances. Tseng and Rufus had fucked, she knew it. She wasn’t sure, however, if Tseng enjoyed it, or if he even wanted to do it. She knew that if Rufus ordered it, Tseng would do it without a question. He was always good at following orders. Always.
Rude shook his head slowly. “He isn’t always so confident. There are times when his lack of self-esteem can get rather annoying.”
Elena’s head tilted to one side. “I pity that you have to deal with that.”
The bald man shrugged playing with the empty glass in front of him. “By now I am used to it. After all these years with him as my partner has prepared me for his rather interesting mood swings.”
“I do not have mood swings!” Reno insisted pointing a finger at him. “I am not a chick.”
“Hey! I resent that! Not all ‘chicks’ have mood swings!”
Reno snorted again. “Laney, you have them all the time.”
Elena pouted as she looked down at her drink. “I do not.”
Tseng put a comforting hand on her arm. “Ignore Reno. He is drunk and as such sounds more stupid than he usually does.”
“I am not drunk!”
Rude gazed at his partner from behind his glasses with a bored expression. “I hate to be the one to break it to you Reno, but you are rather drunk. If you could see yourself now you would have to agree-“
“Can I get you guys anything else?”
Reno’s head sprung up when he heard the owner’s voice. He smiled at the woman who used to be his enemy and nodded slightly. “Make it two more of my usual for me.”
Tifa tilted her head to one side as she watched the red-haired Turk, but finally nodded with a small smile. “Sure. Anything for either of you?” Her gaze shifted to Tseng and Elena.
Tseng waved a hand. “No thank you.”
“None for me either.”
Tifa nodded once again and turned her attention to the last of the Turks. “And you?”
Rude looked at her from behind dark glasses for a moment, then shook his head mutely.
Tifa hesitated for a moment and then nodded slightly. “Alright. I’ll be back with Reno’s drinks.”
She gave them a smile and turned on heel to check on the other customers.
Reno chuckled and turned his attention to Rude. “Why were you suddenly mute?”
Rude shrugged carelessly, his hand once again reaching out to play with the empty glass in front of him. “Didn’t see a reason to speak my answer.”
Reno and Elena exchanged a meaningful glance before Reno’s attention returned to his partner. “Could it have anything to do with your little crush on Tifa?”
His head inclined briefly. “I have no idea what you’re referring to.”
Reno nodded. “Sure thing, buddy. I believe you.”
Of course he didn’t though. As a matter-of-fact he was already coming up with a plot in that screwed up little brain of his to get his friend to say more than two words to the girl.
Now if only that weren’t easier said than done.
