Cloud decided, far too late, that playing cards with a thief was a bad idea. He knew, deep down, that the girl had more tricks up her sleeve than he could ever possibly imagine, yet he had decided that perhaps playing cards with her wouldn’t be such a bad thing to do. The idea that he could see through her was, of course, a stupid theory, and he came to realize that early on in the game when she had beat him in five hands in row. The girl, who was normally too hyper for her own good, seemed to have the uncanny ability to hide what she was feeling when the game was involved.
The girl gazed at him from over her cards, eyes completely empty. For the first few hands he had tried to read what she was thinking, but it didn’t take long for him to realize that it was pointless to do so. The girl’s eyes were too closed off, her face a perfect blank slate. He wondered, briefly, if she had been taking lessons on how to look completely passive from Vincent or if she had developed that skill all on her own.
Cloud laid his cards out across the table, knowing even before the ninja laid hers down that he had lost. His pair of kings looked completely dismal, as if they were glaring at him, silently hissing ‘you had no chance’, even if he already knew that sad fact.
The smile spread across her face before she even laid out her cards. She danced in her seat, shifting from side to side with excitement.
Yuffie slammed her cards down on the table, the three queens smirking up at Cloud as if to say ‘you were foolish to even try’. “Yes! Yes! Yes!” The ninja jumped out of her seat, pumping her fists in the air, dancing around near her seat like she had done for every single hand she had won. It was both rather childish and very endearing.
Despite himself, Cloud smiled.
He always knew there was a reason he adored her.
