She had never thought there was truly much darkness inside of him. True, his work could be one that required someone to turn off their conscience at times, but there was surely no true darkness in him. If there was, then there would have been no way that he could have loved her the way he did. Dark people, cold people, they didn’t know how to love. To them love was as useless as a chipped cup. But he loved her, and he loved her with all of his heart. He breathed her in and made her senses dizzy with the force of his want for her. He loved her with every breath, every blink, every laugh.
She knew that no man could love the way he did, or want the way he did if they were truly dark. No, there was no darkness in him. She was sure of it. She was so, so sure.
She knew, deep down, that all this was an illusion. As warm and loving he could be was just how cold and uncaring he could be. But when he would hold her in his arms she would make herself forget. She would curl up against his side and bask in the warmth of his love, take comfort in his laughter and his kisses. She made herself forget. She lived in her little dream.
But the dream was always shattered. He would come home empty. He would come home blood soaked. He would come home and she would watch him in the dark, both afraid to go to him and both afraid to turn away. And she knew.
All he was turned out to be light.
And all he knew turned out to be darkness.
