She would never tell him that there were times that she would go to the old church and just sit against the broken walls, listening, watching the sun slowly stop shinning into the cracks as the sun went down. She knew, somehow, he wouldn’t approve, even if he wouldn’t say anything to her. He was always more silently disapproving with her than he was with others.
She would close her eyes and sometimes hear her friend’s voice, open them and see her crouched down amongst the flowers.
Her friend would always smile and turn to her. “Aren’t they beautiful?”
And she would always nod.
Then the young flower girl would stand, clasping her hands behind her back. “It’s okay to remember,” she would tell her. “But you have to let go.”
The fighter would blink and her friend would be gone.
She only wished he could hear that advice.
