Summary: He is just like her.
He realizes way too late that this has always been a lesson in limits, in limits of many things. This is just a test, nothing is real. He tries to convince himself that he does the right thing, but he knows deep down he is just hurting those he claims he is trying to protect- the friends he made that he systematically pushes away to protect him, or so he keeps telling himself. In truth he is protecting himself from losing them: the price of immortality is that everyone you come to care for must eventually leave you behind.
He pretends to be a brave man, taking out enemies with a loud bang and a thud and the bright rush of rich, red blood seeping free. He claims that sadness is an emotion he has learned to become detached from, but he knows that when he sits there in the hall and can hear her cry that sadness is all he knows, all he has become. Those sounds she makes, trying to stop those tears and putting on a strong front are murder to his senses, and though he swears he has cried himself out long ago, he knows if he closes his eyes tight enough they will role down his alabaster cheeks for the lives he continues to rip apart.
This life is a fever: he burns with constant doubts and wants. She clings to him with small, pale hands, trying to be his anchor to this world, but there is no strength left in him to keep this charade up: he is a monster and always will be, and he belongs in a world of broken promises and dead flowers.
He looks at her and there is no strength, no bravery inside of her, only the broken girl he wished she would never become. She begs him to be who they know he is, tells him they all love him, care for him, tears drying on her face. She beats on his chest, unable to form words anymore, only able to let the tears fall and cling to him, trying to keep him with her, trying to chase away all the things that haunt him.
He looks at her and kisses her trembling lips knowing they aren’t really that different at all.
He has no bravery either.
