She told me this was the last kiss, the last fight. She was done with this attrition, and she couldn’t handle it anymore. This gradual wearing away of who we both were. We were changing each other and taking away pieces of the other person. “I know now what I have to do,” she told me. “I have to give you up.”
She spoke of our love like it was a bad addiction, like spending your life living on coffee and cigarettes watching the cars pass you by on the busy city street.
“I finally know what to do,” she told me, and she said, “I must quit you.”
And she did.
